All-wheel drive to help in a variety of weather conditions? Check. Fun to drive? Check. Cavernous interior space? Check. The new Volkswagen Golf Alltrack offers a sporty alternative to compact SUVs. The Product Managers of the Golf Family, Volkswagen of America, Inc., share their 10 top features that set the Golf Alltrack apart from the also-rans.
1. Always in 4MOTION®
All-wheel drive helps when you take the road less traveled — or the road during a variety of weather conditions. That’s why the Golf Alltrack comes standard with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. In normal daily driving, the front wheels receive the majority of the drive power. However, when road conditions change, 4MOTION works to transfer grip almost instantaneously to help prevent wheel slippage. 4MOTION works to help ensure that the wheels with the most grip can provide traction where it’s needed.
2. For All Your Adventures
The 2017 Golf Alltrack was built for the great outdoors. So when you’re driving along a graveled forest road to a trailhead, you can have greater peace of mind. The new 2017 Golf Alltrack received a 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA’s tests include front, side and rollover crashes.1
3. Space to Spare
Adventurers need room for the backpacks, tents, camping gear, coolers and muddy hiking boots. With its standard 60/40-split rear seat folded flat, the Golf Alltrack offers 66.5 cu. ft. of storage. Even with the rear seats in use, the Golf Alltrack offers 30.4 cu. ft. of cargo space. And for the outdoor sports lovers, the Alltrack comes standard with a convenient rear-seat center pass-through to store your gear.2
4. The Right Height
Trying to wrestle a mountain bike or road bike, or even a pair of skis, on to the roof rack of a compact sport utility vehicle can be a challenge. But with the Golf Alltrack, the roof height is just 4 feet, 11 inches, so it’s easier to lift a mountain bike or snowboard up there with no problem. Roof rails come standard with the Golf Alltrack, and Volkswagen Accessories offers some very cool gear, like carrier bars to hold your bike, board or a rooftop cargo box.
5. A Mode for Off-Road
Check out the standard Driving Mode Selection button, located on the center console of the Golf Alltrack. Selecting Off-Road Mode allows the driver to then engage Hill Descent Assist.3 If you’re heading down a steep incline, the Golf Alltrack can help maintain speed at a crawling pace. And Hill Descent Assist lengthens the pulses of the standard anti-lock braking so that the tires are able to help slow you down. The available infotainment system can display Off-Road Mode on the touchscreen to show Compass, Steering Angle and Altitude.
6. Six on the Floor
If you love driving, chances are you love the control—and the fun—you get from a manual gearbox. That’s why we offer the Golf Alltrack with a standard six-speed manual transmission. Think of it as adding just a little touch of Golf GTI to the versatile Golf Alltrack. Or drivers can also opt for the six-speed dual-clutch DSG® Automatic.
7. Turbo Boost
To climb mountain roads or merge with freeway traffic, you want an engine with power and performance. That sums up perfectly the Volkswagen EA888 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection. It offers a healthy 170 horsepower, together with 199 lb-ft of torque, to deliver acceleration and great mid-range thrust. With the EPA estimated 30 highway/22 city mpg fuel economy4 with the available 6-speed DSG® automatic transmission, you can get to those out-of-the-way places economically.
8. Rugged Good Looks
We wanted the 2017 Golf Alltrack to stand out from the crowd in the trailhead parking lot. That’s why we toughened it up with rugged black composite cladding around the entire lower part of the car. We also gave it a unique front fascia with a distinctive honeycomb grille and aluminum detailing, along with a distinctive aluminum diffuser at the rear. And if it looks like the Alltrack stands tall, it does: We raised its ground clearance by 0.6 inches over the 2017 Golf SportWagen. We also gave it a set of unique alloy wheels — standard 17-inch wheels for the S and SE trims, and standard 18-inch wheels for the SEL. If looks could thrill, the Golf Alltrack delivers.
9. Wipe-clean Interior
After playing in the great outdoors, you don’t want to worry about dirt messing up the interior of your car, which is why every Golf Alltrack comes with easy-to-clean standard leatherette seating surfaces. In addition to the standard black, beige or gray leatherettes, there’s the available option of rich Marrakesh Brown.
10. Connecting With Your Car
With standard Volkswagen Car-Net® App-Connect,5 you can access select smartphone apps, from your compatible smartphone right on the 6.5-inch color touchscreen of the Golf Alltrack with Apple Car-Play™, Android Auto™ or MirrorLink™ integration.
